The quiet work behind every Olympic medal

The quiet work no one sees

This past week, like so many Canadians, I found myself holding my breath.

Watching athletes step onto the Olympic stage, knowing that behind those few minutes lived years, sometimes decades, of quiet, invisible work.

Canada celebrated its first gold medal. Our pairs figure skaters stood on the podium after trying for 15 years. Fifteen years of showing up. Of falling. Of coming close. And continuing anyway.

It moved me more than I expected.

Because the Olympics are never just about medals.

They’re about what it takes to keep going when the outcome is uncertain.

Freestyle skier Megan Oldham, who won bronze, said something that carries so much truth:

“Work quietly in silence and let success be the noise.”

We see the moment of success.
But we rarely see the quiet mornings.
The doubt.
The setbacks.
The seasons where nothing visible seems to be happening at all.

And yet, that is where everything is built.

This is true whether you’re an Olympic athlete or simply someone trying to live a life aligned with purpose.

Those of us walking a multi-path life know this well.

There isn’t always a straight line.

Sometimes there are detours.
Pauses.
Falls.

Sometimes you try something that doesn’t work.

And sometimes, you continue anyway.

Not because success is guaranteed.

But because something within you says: keep going.

The Olympics remind us that falling is not the opposite of success.

It is part of it.

Resilience isn’t about never struggling.

It’s about returning, again and again, to what calls you forward.

Quietly.
Patiently.
Trusting that the work itself matters, even before anyone else sees it.

If you are in a season of quiet work right now - building something, becoming something, trusting something that isn’t fully visible yet - know that this work matters more than you realize.

Success rarely arrives suddenly.

It arrives quietly, as the echo of all the moments you chose to continue.

With gratitude for falling and getting back up again,
Tamara

The Courage to Surrender Surrender. It's an easy word to write in the sand, but far more difficult to practice when you've always had a plan. Some words are easy to write in the sand. Learning to live them takes a little longer. Today I find myself in a place where this is my challenge. Not something I need to force myself to do, but something I need to learn. I've laid the groundwork. I've sown the right seeds. I've had the conversations that mattered and led with humility, honesty, and...

Looking Up This morning I stepped outside and looked up. For the first time in several days, the sky was a brilliant blue. It struck me just how grateful I felt for something I normally don't give a second thought. I don't think I've ever appreciated a blue sky quite this much. The 191 wildfires burning across northern Ontario have forced thousands of people from their homes and changed entire communities. My heart has been especially with our First Nations communities, including...

The Foundation for Every Dream A little over a week ago, I got sick. Not the kind of sick where you can push through with some lemon ginger tea and an extra-strength Tylenol. The kind where your body quietly, but firmly, says, "Not today." My body gave me such a clear message that there was no choice but to stop. My mind couldn't think, and my body didn't want to move. I didn't even feel guilty for lying on the couch watching episode after episode of a series or for leaving my laptop closed....
