The gift of rest (and why I took two naps this weekend)

When Rest Becomes the Bravest Choice

This weekend, I did something I almost never do: I took two naps.
Not planned. Not deserved through productivity. Just… needed. I always think about napping — daydreaming of pajama days and slow hours where nothing is scheduled — but rarely let myself sink into one. When you live a multi-path life, weekends are often the catch-up zone: the only space where your full-time work loosens its grip and the other dreams, commitments, and creative threads get your attention. Rest can feel like a luxury — or even a guilty pleasure.

But here’s the truth I bumped into somewhere between nap #1 and nap #2:

Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is stop producing.

I didn’t complete the tasks I planned. My to-do list is not shorter.
Yet I’m heading into a very full week feeling nourished instead of depleted.

There was a moment — you know the one — where I stood at the crossroads between “push through” and “pause.”
The emails could wait. The project would still be there. My body whispered, rest, and for once, I listened.

And you know what happened?

  • My mind felt clearer.
  • My creativity softened and opened.
  • My nervous system shifted from “go” to “be.”

No guilt. No productivity metrics. Just presence and breath.

We often celebrate the hustle, but choosing rest — especially when there's more you could do — is a quiet kind of courage. A vote of trust. A signal to yourself that you matter beyond your output.

So here’s my invitation to you this week:

Notice the moment when you're about to speed up.
And ask yourself — what would happen if I slowed down instead?

You might discover that rest is not time lost… but time returned.
Returned to your body. To your creativity. To your self.

If you need it, here's your invitation to pause.

Take the nap.
Wear the pajamas.
Do “nothing,” and call it something.

Because rest isn’t indulgence.
It’s maintenance.

And it just might give you the energy to step into your purpose — with more joy, not just more output.

Wishing you softness this week,
Tamara

Remembering Catherine O’Hara Catherine O’Hara, whose joy belonged to the world. The loss of Catherine O’Hara hit me hard this week, as I know it did so many - a Canadian icon we were so very proud to call our own, and yet someone who never really belonged to one place. She belonged to the world. And perhaps that’s because the way she lived - with joy, whimsy, humility, and deep attentiveness - is so universally human, and so deeply needed right now. Catherine had a rare gift: the ability to...

Trusting the current This month I’ve been doing Gabby Bernstein’s manifesting challenge, and on Day 8 we were invited to choose a sign — something specific that would let us know we’re on the right track. The sign I chose was a river. Flow finds its way. Almost immediately, it started appearing everywhere. Billy Joel’s River of Dreams came on. Then Sarah McLachlan’s “I wish I had a river I could skate away on.” I pulled a Planetary Wave card that read, “You’re being called to trust the...

The conversations that don't need an opening line There are people in our lives we make small talk with — and then there are the few we don't. The ones where conversation starts deep and stays there. The ones who leave us feeling more ourselves than when we arrived. We don't have any small talk. And I'm realizing how much that matters. Earlier this week, I met my friend Rachelle for dinner. It was one of those evenings where conversation stretches time. We talked for hours — the kind where...
