Making room

Creating Space

Let's talk about clutter.

It's something I've wrestled with for most of my multi-path life. Or maybe more accurately, it's something I've continually put off.

As my paths have branched and multiplied over the past few years, it has become even easier to convince myself there were more important things to do. Why would I spend an afternoon cleaning out a closet when there are children with congenital heart disease to send to camp or work to be done to strengthen our response to human trafficking? Choosing the mission always felt like the right decision.

What I'm slowly learning is that clearing the clutter helps the mission.

Clutter carries a weight I've gotten so used to carrying that I've forgotten how I feel without it. In spite of it, I've managed to keep my battery charged, even with that slow but steady drain on my energy. It lingers in the back of my mind, greets me at the doorway when I get home, and follows me from one room to the next. When countertops are covered or shoes spill out of the closet, they aren't simply things waiting to be put away. They become constant reminders of unfinished work that make it harder to think clearly, create freely, and enjoy the home I'm grateful to have.

I've accomplished a great deal despite it. Now I want to discover what's possible when it isn't weighing me down.

Over the next while, I'm going to intentionally declutter my home and create more space for the life I'm building. At the end of each weekly email, I'll include a brief update on how it's going. Not because I think anyone is waiting for a report on the state of my closets, but because saying it publicly will help me stay accountable.

One of the gifts of living a multi-path life is the opportunity to pursue work that matters. The challenge is that it's easy to keep saying yes to those opportunities while putting the things that seem less important on hold.

Maybe your clutter isn't physical. Maybe it's emotional or mental. Whatever form it takes, it can quietly consume the space and energy needed to grow, create, and live with purpose.

For me, creating more space at home is really about making room for everything else I hope to build. I've spent years encouraging others to follow what matters most. It's time I make a little more room for my own next chapter too.

Making space,

Tamara

What Age Knows Maybe you’ve seen the “I once was…” reels filmed in nursing homes. One by one, residents turn over signs revealing what they once did for a living. Some need help holding or turning the sign, but the words appear one after another: Engineer. Registered Nurse. History Professor. CEO. Midwife. Soldier. Surgeon. Every time I see one, I think about what those few words represent. All that knowledge, capability, and experience. A lifetime’s worth. I think our culture has lost sight...

Waiting or Becoming? Last weekend, I spent six hours in two theatres in Stratford. One story was about waiting. The other was about change. By the drive home, I realized those might be the only two stories any of us ever really live. Some of us spend years waiting. We hope something will change. A relationship. A career. Our circumstances. Ourselves. We tell ourselves that maybe tomorrow will be different. Sometimes it is. More often, tomorrow looks a lot like today. And then there are the...

The Person Who Stretches Your Thinking This week, I spent three hours over dinner with a friend. We shared deeply and without filters. We asked each other thoughtful questions, challenged each other's thinking, and explored ideas from different angles. By the time I got home, I realized I wasn't carrying just the memory of a wonderful evening. I was carrying new perspectives that hadn't existed for me a few hours earlier. It reminded me how much the people we surround ourselves with shape who...
