Gratitude, purpose, and the paths that make us who we are

This weekend is Thanksgiving in Canada, and I can’t help but pause in gratitude.

I’m thankful for the obvious blessings — family, health, and the chance to live in this vast, beautiful country that changes with each season: from lilacs in bloom to the hum of cicadas, to harvest leaves and the hush of first snowfall.

Beyond those blessings, I’m especially grateful for the chance to do work that feels aligned with who I am. During the day, I serve with The Salvation Army, an organization that shows up every single day for those who need it most. Beyond that, I live a life that’s anything but linear — a mosaic of pursuits that reflect different parts of my heart.

There’s Lonny’s Smile, the foundation created in memory of my brother, helping send kids with congenital heart disease to camp. There’s Uprooting Trafficking, raising awareness and action around a global crisis. There’s my work in career and purpose coaching, helping others find what lights them up. And through it all, there’s an incredible partner who supports these paths with quiet strength and unconditional love.

Not everyone has the same freedoms or support, and I never take that for granted. Some seasons of life — raising young children, rebuilding after loss, or simply surviving — ask more of us than others. But what I’ve learned is that meaning isn’t found in one grand purpose; it’s discovered in how we show up each day, in gratitude, curiosity, and courage.

So this weekend, whether you’re celebrating surrounded by loved ones or reflecting quietly on your own, I invite you to pause and ask:

What am I thankful for in this season of my life?
What parts of me are longing to be expressed — even in small ways?

Start each day with gratitude. Write down five things you’re thankful for — big or small. Over time, you’ll see how they evolve, just as you do.

Above all, be thankful — not just for what you have, but for the paths you’ve walked, the lessons you’ve learned, and the possibilities still ahead.

Wishing you a heart-full Thanksgiving,
Tamara

Steady in Purpose Before the first session begins, I want to take a moment to simply be here. This morning, I’m choosing to pause. To ground myself in the purpose of this series — and in the gratitude I feel for how it has come together. Here, in this moment. Breathing. Grateful. Tonight, we begin Uprooting Trafficking, a three-part series created to: Raise awareness of human trafficking and sexual exploitation Support understanding of the healing journey for survivors And help people take...

Not All Growth Reaches Up Yesterday, I stopped to admire my friend Robin’s euonymus tree — its branches weaving outward in every direction, steady and full of life. Some paths grow upward. Others grow outward — grounded, connected, and full of purpose. It reminded me how not every kind of growth reaches up. Some of it spreads out — toward new ideas, new people, new ways of being. That’s what a multi-path career feels like to me: growth through connection, creativity, and curiosity rather than...

A life fully lived — until the very last day I didn’t know Jane Goodall personally, but I’m blessed that my dear friend Rachelle Hansen did — and that she gave me a glimpse into what it was like to be in the presence of such an extraordinary human being. What I do know is how she impacted humanity and the earth. It’s impossible not to know that. This morning, I listened to a podcast where Jane was interviewed shortly after her 90th birthday. When asked how old she felt, she replied simply: “I...
